Who We Are

VayTek's Company History & Goals

VayTek, Inc. was founded by John Kesterson and Mike Richardson in May, 1990 and is located in Fairfield, Iowa. The company was created to satisfy a significant, growing demand in scientific markets for the ability to produce a clear, accurate image which is true to the original object.

When VayTek was created, the image processing software offered by other companies had severe limitations. The founders perceived an opportunity to offer their image deconvolution technology as a value-added software that would better meet the specific needs of users. VayTek's software not only has a unique capability to present a more accurate image but, is also easy to use, offers an attractive choice of analytical and measurement capabilities, operates on the most common platforms and is available in various speeds at competitive prices. Over its seven-year history, the company has built a solid reputation for service and reliability, and has become the leader in its field.

Through its commitment to serving its customers, VayTek became aware of a significant market demand for more effective 3D image processing. As a result, in 1992 VayTek, in cooperation with the University of Iowa's Image Analysis Facility, introduced a 3D product to better serve that market. Since that time, VoxBlast(TM) has gained widespread market acceptance for its ease of use and low cost.

During its first years of operation, VayTek marketed its deconvolution and 3D software exclusively in the area of microscopy. Since that time, both software packages have been expanded for uses other than processing data collected from microscopes. The optical engineering principle upon which the deconvolution software is based can remove out-of-focus haze and sharpen images from data acquired through a variety of instruments, including cameras, telescopes, X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging. VayTek's 3D software can process data from many sources, including seismic, ultrasound, optic and radar.

VayTek's deconvolution and 3D programs are enabling technologies with numerous potential applications. VayTek's software is an asset to researchers in scientific, industrial, medical, geoscience, surveillance and enviromental laboratories.

From data acquisistion to publication of results, VayTek offers all of the hardware and software that serious researchers demand. (see our Imaging Mall). For a comprehensive comparison of CCD cameras, see our cameras spreadsheet.

A modular approach to both software and hardware has given VayTek the ability to customize integrated systems and to retrofit to existing systems. Compatibility is assured for microscopists, geoscientists, and medical imagers.

VayTek's goal is to increase the company's usefulness to its customers by maximizing the expertise of the founders and of VayTek employees to develop software and to provide hardware options that will fill customers' needs as scientific research expands into new territories. VayTek is committed to evolving with its customers needs and to incorporating new technological innovations.

New Directions for VayTek include:

  • greater awareness of the technical needs of microscopists, which includes providing an ever-broadening range of specialized software modules for image acquisition/processing, and controls for microscope peripherals.
  • VayTek continues to support research in the oil and gas industry, providing new image analysis and presentation tools.

VayTek is constantly expanding the usefulness of its applications in many fields: (see application notes)

  • medical imaging for cancer detection
  • accurate identification of pathological samples
  • endoscopic surgery
  • radiology
  • environmental applications, including handling and identifying hazardous waste
  • industrial applications, such as quality inspection of semiconductor chips
  • more accurate and faster imaging for military, surveillance, law enforcement and security

There are many programs that utilize filters to enhance images. It is important to understand that VayTek's deconvolution technology is not a filtering device. It is a tool that first determines the blur contributed to the image from the inherent nature of the imaging device itself, then removes that blur. The practical advantages of a deconvolved image, with true PSF, are extremely valuable to scientists and researchers who are looking for accuracy and clarity. (see FAQ)

Interest in confocal microscopes has grown rapidly in the past few years, creating an additional need for VayTek's products. Confocal capabilities are enhanced with use of VayTek's deconvolution and 3D volume visualization software.

Research labs that cannot afford a confocal microscope, find many attractive benefits in VayTek's products:

  • Cost is approximately 10 times less
  • Haze can be removed from single images (does not require a stack of images as does a confocal)
  • Not limited to microscopy as a source of data
  • Can be used with a confocal when the lab upgrades
  • VayTek's 3D software can be integrated into the system to create a volume visualization from multiple 2D slices

All of VayTek's systems, including both software and hardware, are priced competitively. You'll find more features for your dollars in any VayTek system. In addition to lower costs, VayTek offers the best technical support in the industry. We are a resource that you can count on.
