Calcium Labeled Cardiac Myocyte
(Deconvolved Confocal Image)

This movie shows a 3D reconstruction of a cardiac myocyte
in which the calcium has been labeled with a fluorescence dye.
The data was captured with a confocal microscope and then deconvolved
with MicroTome to highlight the surface structures. VoxBlast
was then used to extract the surface from the myocyte. The 3D
surface area was calculated as the surface was extracted. Finally,
the volume and the ratio of the surface area/volume were calculated.
The results showed that
- Estimates of the surface area are incorrect by a considerable
amount due to the convolutions in the surface,
- The surface area/volume ratio is off by large amounts due
to the estimate, and
- The measurement of the surface area is much more accurate
when the data is first deconvolved with MicroTome, even though
the data was originally captured with a confocal microscope.
The movie loop was reduced in size to save download time.
The static image shows the detail of the extracted surface, clearly
visible in the full size movie.
