Three Dimensional Fetus and Seismic images
created with customized VoxBlast software applications.

VoxBlast is a fully featured 3-D digital imaging application for science, engineering and medicine. It offers 3-D Measurement, 3-D Volume Visualization, and 3-D Rendering.VoxBlast is a volume rendering program written and maintained by the University of Iowa's Image Analysis Facility. It was designed as a general purpose rendering application for research. It accepts stacks of registered 2-D images and creates 3-D projections from any viewpoint using an alpha blending or surface rendering algorithm. It includes tools for pseudo- coloring, transparency, lighting, 2-D and 3-D measurements, 2-D slice viewing, cropping, seed fill, movie loop generation, filters, palette editing, surface extraction, polygon rendering, etc.

The VoxBlast application is available in several versions:

VayTek Updates 3-D Volume Visualization Software

In response to requests from users, VayTek, Inc. has provided several new, powerful functions for their VoxBlast software. VoxBlast is a fully featured 3-D digital imaging application for science, engineering and medicine. The latest version of VoxBlast provides 3-D Measurement, 3-D Volume Visualization, and 3-D Rendering in an easier-to-use and more flexible format.

VoxBlast is available in two versions, VoxBlast Express (TM) and VoxBlast RealTime (TM). For real time rendering, the software is matched with a RealTime card, allowing researchers to zoom in, to rotate, and to adjust the opacity in a region of interest with no rendering delays. All RealTime viewing adjustments can now be made by clicking and dragging on the actual 3-D image, without reference to a wireframe display window. Viewing all aspects of a 3D volume in this convenient RealTime format results in less trial and error.

New Features in VoxBlast include:

  • 2-D Image Window with greater options, including the ability to display up to four 2-D images. Each image in the display window can have an independent orientation. It is now possible to display three orthogonal views plus an arbitrary orientation; or the user can view four arbitrary planes at once.
  • The "Slice Tracing" function has been redesigned and expanded.
  • Object Counting: A new Object Counting function allows users to generate a file with the x, y, z coordinates for each object. The coordinates can be imported into a spreadsheet.

The new version takes full advantage of Windows 98, 2000, and NT operating systems for interactive, easy-to-use graphical interfaces.

VoxBlast RealTime(TM) 500 Million Voxels per Second. VoxBlast software has long been a staple for scientific, medical and engineering visualization. The new, RealTime version works with a volume rendering accelerator card that eliminates long waits for rendering by processing 500 million voxels per second. VoxBlast RealTime provides all the functionality of previous versions, but with greatly enhanced speed. For example, VoxBlast RealTime allows researchers to zoom in, to rotate, and to adjust the opacity in a region of interest in real time. Viewing all aspects of a 3D volume more easily results in less trial and error. VoxBlast RealTime requires the VolumePro board.
VayTek is updating VoxBlast RealTime to work with the new VolumePro 1000 3D accelerator card. The VolumePro 1000 board has significant minimum hardware and software requirements that should be noted:
Hardware Requirements:
- IBM PC compatible computer.
- Minimum of 300 MHz Pentium II class microprocessor.
- Minimum of 256 MB RAM.
- Minimum of 37 MB free disk space to install the VolumePro 1000 and VoxBlast software.
- One full length 66 MHz 64 bit PCI slot (for the VolumePro 1000 board).
- An otherwise unused blank I/O slot (for the external power). The blank I/O slot does not have to be immediately adjacent to the VolumePro 1000 board and does not require an associated board connector. Many computers include one blank I/O plate beyond the last expansion board connector. This can be used for the VolumePro 1000 power.
- High end graphics accelerator card such as a card that uses the GeForce2 or 3 technology.
- For embedded geometry applications, a 3D graphics board on the AGP port with the following characteristics:
- Minimum of 120 MB/second texture download speed.
- Minimum of 120 M texels/second texture mapping performance.
- Fast color and depth buffer read.
- For example, a 3D Labs, Inc. Oxygen VX1 graphics board.

Software Requirements: - Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack(SP) 6a or Windows 2000 with SP 1 or later

VoxBlast Light is available at no charge. VoxBlast Light is a limited 3D Volume renderer that allows the user to view a stack of images as a volume. Users can also rotate the volume, as well as apply and edit a palette to the image. Users can load their own data sets, but are limited in what can be done with the data sets. VoxBlast Light now has expanded file-reading capability, including BioRad, Dicom, 8 and 16 bit TIFF, 8 and 16 bit TIFF multi-image, and 8 or 16 bit raw. For Windows only.
Click here to download VoxBlast Light with demonstration data sets. (7.8 MB)
Click here to download VoxBlast Light, without the sample data sets that are included with the version described above. (4.6 MB)

VoxBlast Express for Windows
VoxBlast 3.0 Express for Windows is now available. This is the full-featured, standard version of the VoxBlast application. Contact Patrick Guerin, Customer Technical Support Engineer, for more information, or see the list of new features at VoxBlastWin.html.

VoxBlast for UNIX is written in Motif and X11. VoxBlast for UNIX runs only on the SGI platform. The UNIX version of VoxBlast can be run across a network on a PC or Power Mac, set up as an X11 server, thus allowing multiple users.

VoxBlast was designed specifically to work with CT scans, MR scans, or microscope data. However, VoxBlast is a general purpose tool and is useful in viewing data sets from other sources including petroleum engineering, quality control, chip inspection, non-destructive testing, etc.

SAMPLE MOVIE SCRIPTS

Here are some sample scripts to generate complex movie loops. If you want to create movies with more than simple rotation, you need to save the individual frames from each iteration of your changes to the rendered 3D image. This manual operation can be tedious and time consuming. If you plan to repeat the process, you can write a script file using a simple text editor, to execute VoxTalk commands that will automate the process. Here are some sample scripts that can get you started. The scripts are commented to help you understand how to use the VoxTalk commands.

Click here to download a script which performs a complex rotation in the X, Y, and Z axes (4 KB). Each axis uses a different increment algorithm. The result of this movie generation script can be seen in the Rat Lung Alveoli movie loop. The three axis are varied using sine/cosine functions.
Click here to download a script which uses the Ortho Limit function to "cut through" a volume (2 KB). The object starts from the front view, rotates to an oblique view, then cuts away the object slice by slice.
Click here to download a script in which the cutting plane is rotated on axis inside the volume (3 KB).
Click here to download a script in which the cutting plane is moved through the volume (3 KB).
